Dalla sua introduzione nel febbraio 1973[2], fino al 2005 ne sono state vendute oltre sei milioni di esemplari.
Il contesto
Viene di norma divisa in nove serie:
- La prima serie è stata prodotta dal 1973 al 1979.
- La seconda serie è stata prodotta dal 1978 al 1983.
- La terza\quarta serie è stata prodotta dal 1982 al 1987.
- La quinta serie è stata prodotta dal 1988 al 1992.
- La sesta serie è stata prodotta dal 1991 al 1995.
- La settima serie è stata prodotta dal 1995 al 2000.
- L'ottava serie è stata prodotta dal 2000 al 2006.
- Nel 2007 è arrivata la nona serie.
Della Lancer vennero costruite più versioni corsaiole che hanno partecipato al mondiale Rally e ad altre competizioni: la Lancer 2000 Turbo che gareggiò nel massimo campionato nella prima metà degli anni 80 e la più nota e vittoriosa Lancer Evolution la quale si aggiudicò quattro titoli piloti consecutivi con Tommi Mäkinen dal 1996 al 1999.
Il nome deriva dall'inglese lancer, ovvero lanciere[3].
La settima serie della Lancer è stata sottoposta, nel 1998 al crash test dell'EuroNCAP con il risultato di 1.5 stelle[1].
Nona serie
Nel 2005 la Mitsubishi rivela la concept-car Concept-X al Salone dell'automobile di Tokyo e il suo Concept-Sportback a Francoforte. La nuova Lancer che si ispira a questi due modelli è stata presentata ufficialmente nel gennaio 2007 al Salone dell'automobile di Detroit. La vettura è basata sulla piattaforma Mitsubishi GS. In Nord America è venduta dal marzo 2007 e sarà chiamata Galant Fortis sul mercato giapponese.
