Disegnata da Paul Bracq la BMW Turbo era dotata di porte ad ala di gabbiano. Il motore era centrale ed il telaio su cui si basava era quello modificato della BMW Neue Klasse[2].

Era dotata di un propulsore 4 cilindri turbo da 280 cavalli e la velocità massima raggiungeva i 250 km/h[3].

Ne furono costruiti solo due esemplari[4]. Il suo design influenzò in seguito le linee dei modelli BMW M1, della BMW Serie 8, della BMW Z1 e della concept car M1 homage del 2008.

Der BMW Turbo X1 war ein Prototyp von BMW. Der damalige Chef-Designer Paul Bracq zeichnete die Karosserie.[1][2] Von ihm stammten auch beispielsweise das 6er Coupé E24 und der erste 3er (E21),[3] die wegen ihrer charakteristischen langen und spitz zulaufenden Motorhauben gelegentlich Haifisch-BMWs genannt werden.[4]

The E25 Turbo concept sports car was built by BMW as a celebration for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.[1][2] It was designed by Paul Bracq, with gullwing doors and was based on a modified 2002 chassis with a mid-mounted engine.[2] The Turbo featured a 276 hp turbocharged version of the engine from the BMW 2002, foam-filled front and rear sections to absorb impact, side impact beams, a braking distance monitor utilizing radar,[3] and a futuristic cockpit. The car developed 206 kW (280 PS; 276 hp) at 7100 rpm[citation needed] and could reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 6.6 seconds. The top speed was 250 km/h (155 mph).[4]
