History

The Monteverdi Sierra was a car built between 1977 and 1980 by the Swiss firm Monteverdi, the cars were essentially reskinned Dodge Aspens and Plymouth Volares, although the two convertible versions were based on Dodge Diplomat coupes.[1][3] The coach work was done by the Italian coach building firm Carrozzeria Fissore, where they were given new front and rear end styling, custom Italian leather interiors, custom gauge clusters, and a custom console.[4] The new styling included Fiat 125 headlight assemblies, Renault 12 taillights and Wolf Race mag wheels.

The suspension was changed from the Chrysler torsion bar design to an independent, upper wishbones and lower horizontal arms combined with trailing radius rods, coil springs, adjustable shock absorbers and stabilizer bar. The only powertrain option was a 175 hp (130 kW) Chrysler 318 cubic inch Small Block V8 paired to a Chrysler TorqueFlite A-904 3 speed automatic transmission.[5][6]

Der Monteverdi Sierra war eine Luxuslimousine des Schweizer Automobilherstellers Monteverdi, die von 1977 bis 1982 produziert wurde. Das Fahrzeug löste die High Speed 375-Reihe ab, mit der Monteverdi seit 1967 im Markt für hochpreisige Luxusfahrzeuge vertreten gewesen war. Mit dem Sierra reagierte das Schweizer Unternehmen auf die erste Ölkrise Mitte der 1970er Jahre, in deren Folge das Interesse an schweren, verbrauchsintensiven Hochleistungssportwagen gesunken war: Der Sierra war kleiner, leichter und preiswerter als die bisherigen Monteverdi-Modelle.[1] Er dokumentierte zugleich einen Wandel der Unternehmenspolitik, der von schnellen Sportwagen weg hin zu Fahrzeugen führte, die von Luxus und Komfort geprägt waren. Monteverdi setzte mit dem Sierra das Konzept des Boutique-Autos fort, das er bereits ein Jahr vorher mit dem Geländewagen Safari erfolgreich angewandt hatte. Die Presse nahm die Sierra-Limousine überwiegend mit Lob auf; auf dem Markt konnte sie sich aber nicht durchsetzen: Bis 1982 wurde sie nur in geringen Stückzahlen hergestellt.
